CORE Tanzania’s board president writes from Bushasha with an update on the coronavirus situation in Tanzanian, its effect on life in the village, and its impact on our Twegashe School Program.
Twegashe School is now open at a temporary location in the village church. With the help of our cook, parent volunteers, and two loving and enthusiastic teachers, the start of school has been very successful. The children are having fun, and learning a lot at the same time.

Our construction team is making good progress. The walls are more than half-way up, they’ve constructed a water storage tank, and have also begun work on the biofil toilets for the school.
A donor has offered a very generous matching challenge to CORE Tanzania supporters. Compassion and commitment to education have led three generations of this donor’s family to support the Twegashe School project, each in their own unique way.
We’ve completed all the preparations for construction and recently broke ground digging foundation trenches. We’ve also received our official permission from the government to build a school, so we can now proceed with construction full-speed-ahead!
The first activity to take place on the Twegashe School site was the construction of a road. View a video of that road taking shape.
Learn the back story of CORE Tanzania’s founders and their motivation for supporting access to education in rural Tanzania as told by Seattle freelance author Peggy Sturdivant.
We’re continuing to move forward in preparing to build and operate Twegashe School. Our design team has a set of drawings ready for final review, we’re planning a trip to the village in mid-September to get ready for construction, testing has confirmed that there is water available on our site for drilling a well, and we’ve got an experienced and enthusiastic curriculum committee designing our kindergarten curriculum.
We’re making steady progress in our preparations to build Twegashe Primary School. Highlights from our March newsletter include getting our 501(c)(3) approval, finding a machine that makes blocks suitable for earthquake-resistant construction, receiving an offer to drill a well for the school, and having a few new volunteers join our team.
